A novel concept of modular shape-adaptable sandwich panel with distributed actuation based on shape memory alloys

This work introduces a novel concept of modular, shape-adaptable sandwich panel with distributed actuation system based on shape memory alloys (SMA). The consists modular arrangement rigid cells connected compliant active joints. Each joint hosts SMA wire, which can be controlled independently, enabling the to achieve multiple shapes and complex curvatures single design. A numerical model actuators is developed combining proposed by Brinson finite element joints, validated against experimental results. Further, demonstrator manufactured tested implementing four different patterns measuring final digital image correlation system. results prove capability both in plane out-of-plane deformations order millimeters centimeters, reproduce double curvatures. With possibility integrate sensors additional components inside core, used realize smart structures, might for morphing aerodynamic surfaces or reconfigurable space structures.
